PUNTA GORDA “ KiwaNEWS ”

“CANDIDATES DAY” TODAY FOR SHERIFF AND PROPERTY APPRAISER CANDIDATES!

¨ CANDIDATES DAY : Today you'll get to hear from all 4 Sheriff candidates and the 2 running for Property Appraiser. Should be very informative. On Oct. 30 , we'll have the Commissioner Candidates presentations. Get informed!

¨ GOVERNOR DAVE'S OFFICIAL VISIT : Please try to attend and meet Gov. Dave Sat., Nov. 8 , 2-5pm at Twin Lake Park, 6700 Clark Rd., Sarasota. (I-75 Exit-205, SR-72/Clark Rd.; Keep right toward Arcadia). Cost is $12 and catered by The Oaks Open Pit BBQ, includes smoked pork/chicken/beef, salad, beans soft drinks, dessert. Please sign up today (kids free). Sign up today.

¨ 2008-09 MEMBER HANDBOOKS : The new Handbooks are now available. Please review and if there are any changes , let me know. I will send out a special e-mail with any corrections soon.

¨ DIV-18S FUND RAISER AT VISANI : Our Division 18S fund raiser at VISANI Comedy Club last Thursday netted $600. Cost for the show was $10 with 100% of the funds going to our Kiwanis Division! Thanks to Pres. Joan for organizing this fun event.

¨ CHRISTMAS CARD LANE : Gene Murtha reports CCL invitations letters were sent and the entry deadline is Nov. 28 , installation is Dec. 6 , takedown is Jan. 3 . Please ask a business or group to sponsor a card, it's only $60. Contact Gene at genemurtha@comcast.net.

¨ CCCC CHRISTMAS PARADE : Walt Evans has sign up sheets for our annual hotdog/pepsi fund raiser Saturday, Dec. 6, 9:30am-Noon in the parking lot across from River City Grill. Our booth is also the “Lost Child Booth” for the parade. See Walt.

¨ TEDDY BEAR DISTRIBUTION : Pres. Joan asked members to bring a teddy bear to be given to area law enforcement, fire/EMS, and organizations that need a cuddly creature for a child. On Oct. 23 , the bears we've collected so far will be presented. Please make an attempt to bring a teddy bear. Kiwanis Gov. Dave has asked for this project over the entire Florida District in honor of his wife who passed away recently. It's part of the “Hats & Hugs” program. Members are also asked to have someone make crochet or knitted hats for children who lost their hair due to cancer. Or, purchase a hat for a child.

¨ FOOTBALL “FUN RAISER” : Members put in $5 for their favorite Pro-Football team. Each week if your club wins, you pay nothing, if your team looses you owe $1. If your team wins the SuperBowl, you get 1/2 and direct the other 1/2 to a committee, foundation, or a club need. Bethani Shilladay is chairing; and has made a great computer printout called “The Crying Towel.” Please see her!

¨ HALLOWEEN : Punta Gorda is the place to be with it's huge annual Halloween home decorating in the historical district Oct. 31 and giving out goodies, ice cream, and of course, Vic Desguin is in charge of distributing glo-ropes to the spooks! Contact Vic to help.

¨ BABY ITEMS NEEDED : Pat Gilreath says the Charlotte County CRT is collecting items for Healthy Start between now and Nov. 7 they are collecting formula, receiving blankets, onesies, diapers, rattles, footer sleepers, digital thermometers for babies, new or gently used strollers, carseats, cribs, etc. Please contact Kelly Magiera at 637-5118 or see Pat.

¨ HOLIDAYS AHEAD : Please mark your calendars that on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27 , we will not have a noon luncheon but will continue our traditional morning breakfast here at Bennedetto's. Our annual Christmas Program will be on Dec. 18 here for lunch, but there will not be a Kiwanis meeting on Christmas Day or New Years day.

¨ START SAVING MAGAZINES : Pres. Joan is asking members to save your magazines and bring to Kiwanis. H&SV committee will put a label over your address saying “This magazine donated by a Punta Gorda Kiwanian.” They will be distributed to nursing homes, or places where there is a need. This applies to kids magazines too.

¨ EVERBLADES TEDDY BEAR TOSS? : Bethani Shilladay has proposed a fun night Dec. 13 at the Everblades for this annual event where spectators bring and throw the bears on the ice and they donate them to needy children. Tickets are $12 and she will order them by the Dec. 1 deadline. We can carpool and save parking fees. Please let Bethani know if you are interested.

¨ KFCC NOMINATIONS : Dr. Joe Maggiore announced that members can submit their PCHS or CHS Senior to be considered for a scholarship next spring. Deadline for members to submit a name is Dec. 31 . Contact Joe for details.

¨ KIWANIS KLASSIC KAR SHOW : Chairman Sam Harris is in need of someone who is computer savvy to make flyers, posters, certificates, etc for our fund raiser Mar. 7, 2009 . Please contact Sam ASAP.

¨ NEXT PNM LUNCHEON NOV. 3 : Meets at River City Grille at Noon. Contact Larry Taylor or Norm Hall .

¨ LAST WEEK : Rose Walters, Exec. Dir. Of Good Samaritans.

¨ TODAY's PROGRAM : Candidates Day-I (Sheriff & Property Appraiser).

¨ SPEAKERS : Bill Klossner is October Chair; Oct. 23 , Eddie Lee, Florida District Kiwanis Growth Chair; Oct. 30 , Candidates Day-II (Commissioners). November Chair is Larry Taylor.

¨ GREETER : October is Sam Summers; November is Gene Murtha and December is Bill Martin.

¨ ANNIVERSARY LAST WEEK : Sam & Jeri Summers. BIRTHDAYS : None. WELCOME BACK LAST WEEK : None
