KIWANIS FISCAL YEAR KICKED OFF BY PRESIDENT JOAN; GREAT THINGS AHEAD!

¨ NEW PRESIDENT JOAN GREENE : Last week, Pres. Joan gave an insight of what is expected of our members to have more impact in our community. Your Board approved the 2008-09 budget Tuesday night and we are off and running. Joan will give more details at our weekly meetings. Members and our Committees will be expected to get more involved, and have fun doing it.

¨ 2008-09 MEMBER HANDBOOKS : Forty members received their Member Handbook last week at the meeting. Please review and if there are any changes , let me know. I will send out a special e-mail with the corrections soon.

¨ DIV-18S FUND RAISER AT VISANI TONIGHT : Our Division 18S fund raiser is at VISANI Comedy Club tonight. Cost for the 8pm show is $10 with 100% of the funds going to our Kiwanis Division. Dinner starts at 6pm if you'd like. If you have tickets, don't forget to CALL in and make your reservation!

¨ CHRISTMAS CARD LANE : Gene Murtha reports CCL invitations letters were sent and the entry deadline is Nov. 28, installation is Dec. 6 , takedown is Jan. 3 . Please ask a business or group to sponsor a card, it's only $60. Contact Gene at genemurtha@comcast.net.

¨ CCCC CHRISTMAS PARADE : Walt Evans has sign up sheets for our annual hotdog/pepsi fund raiser Saturday, Dec. 6, 9:30am-Noon in the parking lot across from River City Grill. Our booth is also the “Lost Child Booth” for the parade. See Walt.

¨ TEDDY BEAR DISTRIBUTION : Last week Pres. Joan asked members to bring in a teddy bear to be given to area law enforcement, fire/EMS, and organizations that need a cuddly creature for a child. On Oct. 23 , the bears we've collected so far will be presented to various groups here at our weekly meeting. Please make an attempt to bring a teddy bear. Kiwanis Gov. Dave has asked for this project over the entire Florida District in honor of his wife who passed away recently. It's part of the “Hats & Hugs” program. Members are also asked to have someone make crochet or knitted hats for children who lost their hair due to cancer. Or, purchase a hat for a child.

¨ FOOTBALL “FUN RAISER” : Members put in $5 for their favorite Pro-Football team. Each week if you club wins, you pay nothing, if your team looses you owe $1. If your team wins the SuperBowl, you get 1/2 and direct the other 1/2 to a committee, foundation, or a club need. Bethani Shilladay is chairing; please see her! Jan Nelson contacted Bethani to get her favorite team in the fun-raiser.

¨ HALLOWEEN: Punta Gorda is the place to be with it's huge annual Halloween home decorating in the historical district and giving out goodies, ice cream, and of course, Vic Desguin is in charge of distributing glo-ropes to the spooks! Contact Vic to volunteer.

¨ LIZ HANNON : Tom Hannon says Liz is home and recovering quite well following triple bypass surgery. We wish you fast healing!

¨ HOLIDAYS AHEAD : Please mark your calendars that on Thanksgiving Day , we will not have a noon luncheon but will continue our traditional morning breakfast here at Bennedetto's. Our annual Christmas Program will be on Dec. 18 here for lunch, but there will not be a Kiwanis meeting on Christmas Day or New Years day. I'm sure this breaks your heart. Enjoy the holidays a commin' fast!

¨ START SAVING MAGAZINES : Pres. Joan is asking members to save your magazines and bring to Kiwanis. H&SV committee will put a label over your address saying “This magazine donated by a Punta Gorda Kiwanian.” They will be distributed to nursing homes, or places where there is a need. This applies to kids magazines too.

¨ NEW KIWANIS GOLF SHIRTS: Larry Taylor is still taking orders for a new, lighter weight Kiwanis Orange golf shirts with logo. Total cost is $32. See Larry.

¨ KFCC NOMINATIONS : Dr. Joe Maggiore announced that members can submit their PCHS or CHS Senior to be considered for a scholarship next spring. Deadline for members to submit a name is Dec. 31 . Contact Joe for details.

¨ PRESENTATIONS : Past President Sheryl presented 3 checks last week; $500 to Joann Winkler for Empty Bowls; $500 to Mauriann Yusta for The Love of Kids Christmas Dinner, Dec. 9 ; and $200 to Eric DeYoung for the Charlotte State Bank Fund for the children of Clay Sellers who died recently.

¨ KIWANIS KLASSIC KAR SHOW : Chairman Sam Harris is in need of someone who is computer savvy to make flyers, posters, certificates, etc for our fund raiser Mar. 7, 2009 . Please contact Sam ASAP.

¨ PG Kiwanis KALENDAR : Oct. TBA : Peanut Day Fund Raiser; Mar. 7, 2009 : PG Kiwanis Family Kar Show.

¨ NEXT PNM LUNCHEON NOV. 3 : Meets at River City Grille at Noon. Contact Larry Taylor or Norm Hall .

¨ LAST WEEK : Joan Greene, Presidents Day!

¨ GREETER : October is Sam Summers; November is Gene Murtha and December is Bill Martin.

¨ BIRTHDAYS : Warren Bolton and Norm Hall.
