KiwaNews: Feb 22, 2007

By: Bob Carpenter, Secretary     941/629-5238    carp813@comcast.net

¨  KIWANIS FAMILY KAR SHOW: Sam Harris says the Kar Show was a huge success and thanked everyone who helped. Sam said we had 130-140 cars and about 500 spectators. After a chilly start, but a sunny day, everyone seemed to have a great time. Treasurer Bob Naylor will give us an update on the dollars raised and I understand it will be a pleasant surprise.

¨  AQUI ESTA CLEANUP: The next Community Service cleanup on Aqui Esta is set for Saturday, March 10. Chair Marilyn Larkin asks members to meet at Bill Klossner’s church at 8:30am. Bring gloves!

¨  CENTRAL FLORIDA TORNADO RELIEF: The Florida District of Kiwanis is asking clubs and members to help assist those counties hit by the killer tornados last week. The money will go to the Florida District Kiwanis Foundation to administer to those counties in need. Pres. Pedro will ask members today to make a donation along with a club donation, to help those in need, as they helped us after Hurricane Charley. We’ve been there before and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

¨  FUND RAISING COMMITTEE: The Board has discussed different ways to raise funds. Gary Ginter said he’d chair the committee and asks members join him to come up with new ideas we can raise money to put back into our community. Your help is needed. See Gary ASAP.

¨  KFCC GIVES PLAQUE LAST WEEK: Member Rubin Stublen was presented a plaque last week for his efforts in donating over $1,000 to the KFCC Scholarship Fund. KFCC President Rick Wright did the honors. The last two years he collected donation at his monstrous Christmas display and split the funds with KFCC and our Club.

¨  P.C. KIWANIS/OUTBACK FUNDRAISER (INTERCLUB): They will have a special lunch meeting Tuesday, Mar. 13 at Outback in Murdock. Pres. Robert Tally said for $10 you get lunch that starts at noon. Talley said this is a great fellowship luncheon and will not have the usual program. Sheryl Flavin has tickets which much be purchased in advance. With 4, you get Interclub!

¨  ANNUAL BOY SCOUT CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY: On Feb. 1 we kicked off our annual BSA Friends of Scouting fund raiser to help our local Boy Scout Council and support the Scout Camp in Charlotte County. Members were given pledge cards; please attach a check payable to “BSA.” Keep the small stub as this is tax deductible. You can also make a pledge on the card; check when you want the Scout Office to send an invoice in one payment, or in 2-3 or 4 installments. Last year, Youth Services gave $500 toward the $7,800 raised and the rest came from members. So far, we have collected or pledges of $5,230 toward the $7,800 goal.

Some members wanted the option to donate directly to local scouting groups instead of the Council campaign. A reserve account was set up with the Youth Services Committee. These funds will be allocated by YS upon request by local scout organizations. Please give your check directly to Chair Sam Summers of Youth Services, payable to “ Punta Gorda Kiwanis.”

¨  WEATHER CHANGES LAST WEEKS PROGRAM: Our speaker was supposed to be Daniel Noah, Meteorologist (Weatherman) thanks to Sam Harris. Unfortunately, the weatherman was snowed in, in Cincinnati. Sam instead provided the program time updating us on our Kar Show fund raiser.

¨  PNM LIST: Here’s a list of proposed PNM’s brought to lunch in the past few months. Membership needs to know their status. Chairman Robin Lindecamp said the next PNM Education Lunch is Tuesday, March 6 at 11:30a.m. and their application is needed now. On the list are Bobby Diehl (Harris); Bibi Ullah (Boehm); Mark Geach (Ginter) and Julius Palmero (Rooney).

¨  DON KIAH HAS NEW E-MAIL: Please update your member e-mail list for Don to: dkiah1403@comcast.net.

¨  DIVISION-18S PRAYER BREAKFAST: This annual event will be held Saturday, April 21, 8am at the Port Charlotte Elks Club.

¨  ENGLEWOOD-CAPE HAZE NEW MEETING  PLACE: Please make a change in your Membership Handbook that the new E-CH club starts meeting Feb. 15th at Angele’s Restaurant (Formerly Cajun Club) which is on the Sarasota County side of Englewood. If we get an Interclub together, the Board has agreed to credit the Thursday meeting meal charge since the Englewood-Cape Haze club meets at the same time. See Margit Sargent, Interclub chair to sign up.

¨  TODAY’s PROGRAM: Our own member Bob Crispin.

¨  LAST WEEK: Sam Harris update on Kar Show fund raiser.

¨  SPEAKERS: March chair is Robin Lindecamp.

¨  BIRTHDAYS LAST WEEK: Ralph Jordan.

¨  ANNIVERSARY’S LAST WEEK: None.

¨  WELCOME BACK LAST WEEK: DePalma, Boehm, Stublen, and Enger.

¨  GUESTS: Emily Dorr, Bob Miller, Linda Caviness, Rick Wright, and PNM’s Bibi Ullah (Boehm) and Julius Palermo (Rooney).

¨  50/50 WINNER: $77, Roger Enger (Back from a long cruise).

You can get one at Nolan Family Insurance, Cayo Costa Dental, SunTrust (318 Tamiami Tr./Emily’s office), The Welcome Center (I-75/Exit-161), Bill Martin State Farm Insurance, Peace River Wildlife Center, C.C. Chamber (Punta Gorda Office), P.G. Chamber, Caruso Bay Gifts and Accurate Accounting (Joan Greene’s office). Local artist Ron Bates donated his 16x24 color poster artwork to our Club as a fund raiser.

¨  ALUMINUM CANS: Members are asked by Community Service to bring aluminum cans for The Peace River Wildlife Center. Please double-bagged cans and put in Dan Garrett’s car.

¨  CELL PHONES: Community Service is still collecting used cell phones then given to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. They are deprogrammed and can only call directly to 9-1-1. They are given to groups like CARE and distributed to abused women to get help if the need help. Please bring your phone and charger; give to Roger Enger.
